Why humanitarian organizations choose Michiels
Humanitarian programs need a partner they can count on: the right product, at the right specification, certified to deliver on time and within budget all in accordance with EU food law. That is the standard we have worked to for three decades.
Certified to deliver excellence
FSSC 22000, HACCP, Halal, non-GMO and radiation-free production, all in accordance with EU food law. We are a United Nations approved food supplier, and every batch can be released with the certificates your program requires.
An approved baby food producer
Michiels is approved as a baby food producer by FAVV, the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain. It proves the care that goes into every blend we make.
Maximum value for every dollar spent
We control the full chain in-house, which keeps our cost structure lean and our pricing competitive. Our packaging is designed for efficient container transport, and nothing goes to waste. The result: more people reached per dollar of your budget.
A partner you can rely on
You get a contact person who knows your program, a technical team that understands formulation and packaging, and an R&D department that will develop a blend to your specification. We answer questions quickly and we deliver what we promise.
Partnerships
Who we work with
Every organization sources and decides in its own way. We adapt to how you work, not the other way around.
UN agencies and multilateral organizations
Tender-based procurement, strict compliance requirements and large volumes on fixed timelines. We have been a registered supplier for three decades and we know what your framework agreements demand.
NGOs
Programs that need flexibility: varying volumes, short lead times and challenging destinations. We ship anything from a single container to large volumes, and help you get the required documentation.
Foundations and government partners
We help you maximize the impact of every donation and every budget. Our R&D team develops the blend for your nutritional target, we produce it, and we report on it in the detail your donors expect. Because access to nutritious food creates the foundation for health, education, resilience and economic opportunity.
Humanitarian supply chain
Built to arrive
Our supply chain is designed around the realities of humanitarian distribution, so that every blend reaches the people who need it.
We produce on a highly automated line, at 325 metric tons per day on a single site in Zulte, Belgium, close to the port of Antwerp. Automation keeps every batch consistent and our volumes reliable. All blends are packed in 1.5 kg alu-coated bags, 9 per cardboard box, with an 18-month shelf life and a minimum order quantity of one container. The packaging protects the product against moisture and handling, and is sized to fill a container efficiently.
Every shipment comes with full traceability and the release certificates your program requires: origin, production, quality assurance, health, shelf life and more.
Raw material selection
Every raw material is tested before it enters our site. Corn, wheat, soybeans, milk powder, oil, minerals and premix are screened for heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, dioxins and GMOs, and checked again at delivery. Suppliers are selected on certification, permits and specification, and reassessed regularly.
A validated process
Extrusion makes the grain digestible, ensures microbiological safety and improves the bioavailability of essential nutrients. It is the core of our operations and is monitored continuously, with our laboratory results benchmarked against an accredited lab.
Precise fortification
Micronutrients only work at the right dose. We dose with a high degree of accuracy and we work with specialized micronutrient suppliers, which allows us to match a nutritional profile rather than approximate it.
Developed with you
Our R&D team starts from your target group and your nutritional specification, builds a formulation, produces samples, and adjusts until the product is right. One contact person guides the project from briefing to first production run.
Impact in practice
Working towards the Sustainable Development Goals
Our main focus is SDG 2, Zero Hunger: nutritious, protein-rich and fortified products that improve food security where it is needed most. Our work also contributes to good health and well-being (SDG 3), gender equality, as food security opens up opportunities for women and girls (SDG 5), investment in efficient and sustainable production (SDG 9), responsible use of raw materials and by-products (SDG 12), deforestation-free sourcing under the EUDR (SDG 15) and long-standing partnerships with UN agencies (SDG 17).
Impact in practice
More sustainable packaging, developed with a customer
Together with one of our customers, we tested and improved the packaging of a food aid blend. The result is a more robust bag that better protects the product during transport and handling, so less food is lost along the way. A small change, multiplied by millions of bags.
Impact in practice
Measuring the ecological footprint of a fortified blend
We contributed to research into the environmental performance of CSB++ (Super Cereal Plus), looking at what a fortified cereal blend actually costs in resources from field to finished bag. Knowing where the impact sits is the first step to reducing it.
Impact in practice
Sharing knowledge with UNICEF and the sector
Michiels takes part in the UNICEF nutrition supplier forum, where producers, agencies and researchers discuss product quality, specifications and supply reliability. Better products come from better conversations between the people who buy them and the people who make them.
Ethics & responsibility
How we work
Our way of working has stood up to 30 years of audits, third-party inspections and UN procurement requirements.
We are a Belgian family business, producing on one site under EU labor, food safety and environmental law. Our suppliers are selected on documented criteria and reassessed regularly. Our raw materials are traceable from intake to finished batch, and our sourcing is aligned with the EU Deforestation Regulation. Our shareholders, board and workforce reflect a genuine balance across genders.
We make the most of every grain. We use the whole grain, and the very small side streams that remain go into animal feed. Our robust packaging protects the product and fills a container efficiently: less food lost, fewer shipments and lower costs for your program.
If your organization requires specific policies, declarations or supplier assessments, just ask. We are happy to discuss what you need.
