Expertise, quality & innovation
Over 65 years of cereal processing come down to one thing: knowing what a grain does, and proving it. Here you find our certifications, how we control the chain from raw material to loaded container, how our R&D team innovates for your product, and how we take responsibility for the way we produce.
Quality & compliance
Control across the whole chain
We produce on a single site in Zulte, Belgium, from raw material intake to container loading. That is what makes the following possible.
Food safety, built into the process
Our HACCP system is built on a full hazard analysis covering microbiology, mycotoxins, contaminants, allergens and packaging. Extrusion ensures microbiological safety and improves the bioavailability of essential nutrients. It is the core of our operations and is monitored continuously.
Traceability in both directions
Every batch is traceable from raw material intake to shipment, and back. We can tell you which lot went where, and when.
Documentation on request
Certificates of origin, production, quality assurance, health and shelf life, non-GMO and radiation-free declarations, Halal certificates, specification sheets and completed supplier questionnaires. Tell us what you need and you will have it.
Quality in practice
Two worlds, one standard
Every product we make meets the same high standards. Humanitarian programs and private label partners each have their own requirements and documentation.
Quality for food aid
Production against the written specifications of humanitarian nutrition programs, contaminant analysis before intake, validated heat treatment and batch release documentation for your program. For UN agencies, NGOs, foundations and government partners.
Quality for private label and co-manufacturing
Specification stability batch after batch, quality during development, support for your labeling obligations, and a documentation set that stands up to your audit. For retailers, brands and growing scale-ups.
R&D
From market insight to a product that works
Our R&D team turns a nutritional target, a market trend, a benchmark product or a rough idea into a formulation that can be produced at scale. From raw material selection to the finished product, the team is involved at every step.
Continuous improvement
We keep a close eye on market trends and changing consumer needs, and turn those insights into new product ideas, together with our customers.
Raw material selection
Which grain, from which supplier, at which specification. A great formulation needs ingredients of consistent quality, so we select first and formulate second. Suppliers are assessed on certification, permits and intake analysis, and every raw material passes quality tests before it is processed.
Formulation and development
From composition to samples to adjustment, in as many rounds as the product needs. We work directly with specialized micronutrient suppliers, so we can go beyond a standard premix whenever a nutritional profile calls for it.
Our own laboratory
We test moisture, viscosity, microbiology, taste and smell in our own laboratory. Results are benchmarked against an accredited laboratory, and our instruments are calibrated regularly.
Process development
Extrusion parameters are part of the recipe, not a setting. Adjusting them changes texture, density and how a product behaves once water is added, which is often where a good formulation becomes a good product.
Innovation and knowledge sharing
We work with corn, wheat, oats, soy, spelt and rice, and we are open we are open to exploring new grains and raw materials together. We also contributed to research into the ecological footprint of fortified cereal blends, and we take part in the UNICEF nutrition supplier forum, where producers, agencies and researchers discuss product quality and supply reliability.
Responsibility
Producing food is a responsibility in itself
Our main contribution is the product: nutritious, protein-rich and fortified food that improves food security where it is needed most. That is Zero Hunger, the second Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations, and it is the one our business exists for. Around it, we work on a number of others.
Nothing goes to waste
We use the whole grain, and the very small side streams that remain go into animal feed, under FCA certification. Our robust packaging protects the product and fills a container efficiently: less food lost, fewer shipments, lower cost.
Responsible sourcing
Suppliers are selected on documented criteria and reassessed regularly, and our sourcing is aligned with the EU Deforestation Regulation.
Investing in efficient production
We invest in more energy-efficient equipment and in production infrastructure built to last, because a plant that runs well wastes less of everything.
People
Our shareholders, board and workforce reflect a genuine balance across genders. And many of our colleagues have stayed loyal to Michiels for years, which says more about how we work than any policy could.
Partnerships
More than 30 years of working with UN agencies, NGOs and humanitarian partners: relationships built on trust, and on delivering what we promise.
